CBD Dosage Guide — How Much CBD Should You Take?

One of the most common questions from new CBD users is: how much should I take? The honest answer is that CBD dosing is highly individual — it depends on your body weight, metabolism, the condition you’re addressing, and the product you’re using. CBD Wellness — one of the first CBD brands in the United States with 16+ years of experience — provides this guide to help you find your optimal dose.

General CBD Dosage Guidelines

A widely used starting framework is 1–6mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, adjusted based on the severity of your needs:

  • Mild issues (general wellness, mild stress) — 1 – 2mg per 10 lbs body weight
  • Moderate issues (chronic stress, moderate pain, sleep difficulty) — 3 – 4mg per 10 lbs body weight
  • Severe issues (chronic pain, severe anxiety, inflammation) — 5 – 6mg per 10 lbs body weight

Example: A 150lb person with moderate issues would start at approximately 45–60mg per day.

Start Low, Go Slow

Always start at the lower end of the range and increase gradually every 3–7 days until you find your optimal dose. CBD is biphasic — meaning too little may be ineffective, and too much may cause drowsiness or diminishing returns.

Dosage by Product Type

  • Tinctures (sublingual) — Fastest absorption (15–45 min). Most precise dosing. Hold under tongue for 60–90 seconds before swallowing.
  • Gummies/Edibles — Slower onset (45–90 min) but longer duration. Good for sustained effects.
  • Topicals — Apply directly to affected area. No systemic absorption — best for localized pain and inflammation.
  • Vapes — Fastest onset (minutes). Shorter duration. Best for acute relief.
