Our Scientific Development & Manufacturing Process
From Research to Finished Product
At CBD Wellness, our products are not created through shortcuts, mass-market formulas, or white-label manufacturing models common throughout the CBD industry. Instead, each formulation is developed through a deliberate process grounded in scientific research, formulation science, ingredient quality standards, and real-world evaluation.
The development of a CBD Wellness product is a long-term undertaking. From the earliest idea to the final product becoming available to customers, the process typically spans 12–24 months. This time allows us to evaluate research, refine formulations, verify ingredient quality, and ensure consistency in manufacturing.
Our goal is simple: to produce cannabinoid formulations that prioritize quality, transparency, safety, and responsible scientific development.
Below is an overview of the multi-stage process that guides every product we create.
Stage 1: Identifying a
Real-World Need
Real-World Need
Every CBD Wellness product begins with a simple question: What real-world wellness challenge are people trying to solve? In an industry often driven by marketing trends, we start instead by identifying patterns in:
- Consumer feedback and wellness reports
- Practitioner observations
- Emerging cannabinoid research
- Scientific literature relating to plant-based compounds
Rather than launching dozens of products rapidly, we focus on identifying opportunities where cannabinoid formulations may offer meaningful support within responsible wellness boundaries. This stage helps ensure that each product we develop serves a clear and thoughtful purpose.
Stage 2: Scientific Research & Evidence Review
Once a potential product concept has been identified, the next step involves a thorough review of available research. Cannabinoid science is an evolving field, and responsible product development requires careful interpretation of emerging data. During this stage we evaluate a wide range of information sources including:
- Peer-reviewed cannabinoid research
- Pharmacology studies involving cannabinoids and
botanical compounds - Data relating to the endocannabinoid system
- Safety and dosage range studies
- Botanical synergy research
The purpose of this phase is not to make exaggerated claims or promises. Instead, it helps guide formulation design based on what is currently understood about cannabinoids and plant compounds. Responsible development requires scientific restraint, careful evaluation, and a commitment to transparency.
Stage 3: Formulation Development
After the research stage, formulation work begins. Creating a cannabinoid formulation is more complex than simply mixing CBD extract with a carrier oil. Proper formulation requires careful consideration of numerous variables, including:
- Cannabinoid ratios
- Botanical compatibility
- Bioavailability strategies
- Stability of active compounds
- Delivery method (tincture, topical, etc.)
During this stage, multiple prototype formulations may be created and evaluated. Adjustments are made based on factors such as:
- absorption characteristics
- ingredient compatibility
- formulation stability
- overall product usability
Formulation science is both technical and iterative. It often requires repeated refinement before arriving at a final composition that meets our internal quality standards.
Stage 4: Ingredient Selection & Quality Evaluation
The quality of a finished product can never exceed the quality of its ingredients. For this reason, ingredient sourcing is one of the most critical aspects of the CBD Wellness process.
Ingredients are selected based on several criteria:
Purity- All ingredients must meet strict quality requirements and be
screened for contaminants.
Traceability- Ingredients must be sourced from suppliers capable of
providing documentation regarding origin, production standards, and testing.
Compatibility with cannabinoid formulations- Not all botanical ingredients interact the same way when combined with cannabinoids. Ingredients are evaluated for stability and compatibility.
Common screening standards include testing for:
- heavy metals
- pesticide residues
- microbial contamination
- solvent residues
Only ingredients meeting quality requirements are used in our formulations.
Stage 5: CBD-Rich Hemp Extract Selection
A central component of CBD Wellness formulations is CBD-rich hemp extract. Hemp extracts can vary dramatically in quality depending on factors such as cultivation methods, extraction processes, and cannabinoid preservation.
Because of this variability, extract quality verification is an essential step in the process. Extracts are evaluated for:
- cannabinoid profile accuracy
- compliance with legal THC limits
- absence of contaminants
- consistency of cannabinoid concentration
Proper verification helps ensure that extracts used in CBD Wellness products meet established safety and quality standards.
Stage 6: Prototype Development & Evaluation
Once ingredients and extracts have been selected, formulation prototypes are created. Prototype batches allow us to evaluate:
- formulation stability
- cannabinoid dispersion
- ingredient interaction
- physical characteristics such as texture, aroma, and consistency
This stage often requires multiple iterations. Minor changes in formulation can influence how cannabinoids interact with carrier oils or botanical compounds.
The objective is to develop a formulation that is stable, consistent, and aligned with the design principles established during the research stage.
Stage 7: Real-World Observational Feedback
Before products are finalized for production, formulations may undergo extended real-world evaluation periods.
This stage involves gathering observational and anecdotal feedback related to factors such as:
- ease of use
- product consistency
- sensory characteristics
- user experience
Observational feedback helps refine product design in ways that laboratory evaluation alone cannot capture.
While anecdotal reports are not equivalent to clinical trials, they can provide valuable insights when interpreted responsibly. This stage contributes to refining formulation details and ensuring the product is practical for everyday use.
Sunflower Oil
Why do we use Sunflower Oil over other MCT oils?
Sunflower oil is high in vitamin E which reduces respiratory problems and can aid in blood circulation and strengthening the immune system. It is also high in unsaturated fat and low in saturated fat making it a great, nutritional alternative. Over 70% of sunflower oil is composed of linoleic acid, a type of polyunsaturated Omega-6 fatty acid and contains small amounts of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) known to help with weight loss. Sunflower oil has also been know to help with the following:
-
Immune System
-
Blood Circulation
-
Respiratory Issues
-
Heart Health
Unrefined Coconut Oil
Why do we use unrefined coconut oil instead of other types of coconut oils?
Unrefined coconut oil retains all its antimicrobial properties, which can make it a good choice of cleanser or moisturizer for people who have trouble with acne. Although coconut contains varying amounts of moisture, it's not the oil itself that helps your skin feel less dry. Apply the oil immediately after washing your face or getting out of the shower for best results, because the oil will help lock moisture in the skin. Unrefined coconut oil has also been found to help increase your cell regeneration . This means that your body will more quickly replace old cells with newer, healthier cells. This type of coconut oil is High in lauric acid and other natural agents, which can help reduce the activity of fungus, bacteria, and viruses that cause various illnesses.

Bees Wax
Beeswax is considered to be among man’s earliest raw materials. Adopted by ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, Beeswax was ancient man's first cosmetic & medicinal material. The bees was is filtered naturally by pouring the melted wax through a double metal sieve. This filtering process removes the impurities that are found in unfiltered beeswax which might include pollen and bee parts. Once the beeswax is filtered, it is poured into silicone molds, to cool and dry. No additional processing is performed other than this. We are proud to say that we source all of our beeswax domestically from beekeepers in the Pacific Northwest whom we have long established relationships with and we strongly believe it is some of the highest quality wax around!
Shea Butter
Shea Butter comes from the fruit of the Shea Tree, which is found only in Africa. The Shea tree produces a fruit, similar to a plum, which contains a nut which dried and the kernel inside is then removed. The kernel is ground up to obtain Shea Butter, which has softening, nourishing and moisturizing benefits. It also protects against the sun’s rays, considered an anti-oxidant (vitamin E) and has regenerating and restructuring properties.
