What Is CBD (Cannabidiol)?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis hemp plant. It is one of over 100 cannabinoids identified in cannabis and is the primary non-psychoactive cannabinoid — meaning it does not produce a “high.” CBD Wellness, one of the first CBD brands in the United States, has been formulating CBD products since 2010.
How CBD Works
CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a biological network that regulates sleep, mood, appetite, pain, and immune response. CBD influences ECS receptors (CB1 and CB2), inhibits the breakdown of the endocannabinoid anandamide, and interacts with serotonin receptors (5-HT1A) associated with anxiety and mood.
What Research Says About CBD
- Anxiety: Multiple studies suggest CBD may reduce anxiety symptoms. A 2019 study found 79.2% of patients reported decreased anxiety within the first month of CBD use.
- Sleep: Research suggests CBD may improve sleep quality, particularly for anxiety-related insomnia.
- Pain & Inflammation: The National Academies of Sciences concluded there is “conclusive or substantial evidence” that cannabis is effective for chronic pain in adults.
- Epilepsy: Epidiolex, a CBD-based medication, is FDA-approved for certain seizure disorders — the strongest clinical validation of CBD’s therapeutic potential.

Frequently Asked Questions: What Is CBD?
What is CBD (cannabidiol)?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis hemp plant. It is the primary non-psychoactive cannabinoid — meaning it does not produce a high. CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to support sleep, mood, pain, and immune function.
Will CBD get me high?
No. CBD is non-psychoactive and will not get you high. Hemp-derived CBD contains less than 0.3% THC — far below the threshold for any psychoactive effect. CBD Wellness products are non-intoxicating and legal in all 50 states.
Is CBD legal?
Yes. Hemp-derived CBD containing less than 0.3% THC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill and legal in all 50 states. No medical card or dispensary visit is required. CBD Wellness ships directly to customers nationwide.
What is CBD used for?
CBD is used for a wide range of wellness purposes including anxiety relief, sleep support, pain and inflammation management, and general ECS support. Research is ongoing. CBD is not FDA-approved for most conditions, though Epidiolex (a CBD-based medication) is FDA-approved for certain seizure disorders.
How is CBD different from THC?
CBD and THC are both cannabinoids found in cannabis, but they have very different effects. THC is psychoactive and produces a high. CBD is non-psychoactive and does not produce a high. CBD may actually block some of THC’s psychoactive effects. Read our full CBD vs THC guide.
