What Is CBG & What Are the Effects?

CBG (cannabigerol) is often called the “mother” or “parent” cannabinoid because it is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids — including CBD and THC — are synthesized. CBD Wellness, one of the first CBD brands in the United States, was among the first to develop CBG-specific formulas.

What Does CBG Do?

CBG is non-psychoactive and interacts with both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. Research suggests CBG may:

  • Reduce inflammation (anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Support mood and mental clarity
  • Provide antibacterial and antifungal effects
  • Promote bone growth
  • Support gut health and reduce intestinal inflammation
  • Provide neuroprotective effects

CBG vs CBD: What’s the Difference?

While CBD and CBG both interact with the ECS, they do so in different ways. CBG binds more directly to CB1 and CB2 receptors, while CBD works more indirectly. CBG is often described as having more energizing, focus-enhancing effects compared to CBD’s more calming profile. Many users find combining both produces the best results through the entourage effect.

Frequently Asked Questions: CBG

What is CBG (cannabigerol)?

CBG (cannabigerol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis. It is called the “parent” or “mother” cannabinoid because all other cannabinoids — including CBD and THC — are synthesized from CBGa (the acidic precursor to CBG). CBG interacts directly with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system.

What are the effects of CBG?

Research suggests CBG may reduce inflammation, support mood and mental clarity, provide antibacterial effects, promote bone growth, support gut health, and provide neuroprotective effects. Many users report CBG has a more energizing, focus-enhancing effect compared to CBD.

Is CBG better than CBD?

CBG and CBD are not directly comparable — they work differently and serve different purposes. CBG tends to be more energizing and directly anti-inflammatory, while CBD is more calming and broadly supportive. Most users find the best results by combining both, which is why CBD Wellness tinctures include both cannabinoids in their proprietary profiles.

Will CBG get me high?

No. CBG is non-psychoactive and will not produce a high. Like CBD, hemp-derived CBG products contain less than 0.3% THC and are legal in all 50 states.

What is the best CBG product for inflammation?

For systemic inflammation, our 1000mg CBG-Rich Tincture taken sublingually provides full-body anti-inflammatory support. For localized inflammation (joints, muscles), our 2oz 2000mg CBG Anti-Inflammatory Salve provides targeted topical relief.
