Alzheimer's disease is one of the most devastating neurological conditions of our time — and one of the least understood. With no approved treatments capable of slowing its progression, researchers around the world are exploring new therapeutic avenues. Among the most promising is the role of cannabinoids in addressing both the symptoms and underlying mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease.
At CBD Wellness, one of the first CBD brands in the United States, we review only what the science supports. For related research, see our articles on cannabis and ALS, cannabis and autism spectrum disorder, and cannabis and chronic pain.
What Is Alzheimer's Disease?
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurological condition characterized by gradual loss of memory, cognitive function, and the ability to carry out daily tasks. It is estimated to affect up to 5.8 million Americans. Common symptoms include depression, irritability, anxiety, appetite loss, and sleep disruption. There is currently no cure and no approved treatment capable of slowing progression.
The Endocannabinoid System and the Brain
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a key role in regulating neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, neuronal survival, and memory formation — all directly implicated in Alzheimer's progression. CB1 and CB2 receptors are dense throughout the brain, making the ECS a compelling therapeutic target. Learn more in our Beginner's Guide to CBD.
Key Research Findings
Inhibiting Amyloid Plaque Formation
Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute found that THC inhibits the enzyme responsible for amyloid plaque aggregation — the key hallmark of Alzheimer's. Researchers from Madrid's Complutense University and the Cajal Institute found that synthetic cannabinoid WIN 55,212-2 prevented cognitive impairment and reduced neurotoxicity in animal models. The Salk Institute published similar findings in 2016.
Improving Memory and Reducing Neuroinflammation
Researchers at Ohio State University found that older rats given WIN 55,212-2 for three weeks showed a 50% improvement in memory and a 40–50% reduction in neuroinflammation vs. controls. Israeli researchers found THC can restore age-related memory deterioration in rats.
Reducing Oxidative Stress
A 2020 analysis of preclinical data concluded cannabinoids can reduce both neuroinflammation and oxidative stress linked to Alzheimer's onset, and proposed targeting the ECS as a promising AD treatment strategy.
Clinical Observations
Case reports in Neurodegenerative Disease Management documented cannabis use in elderly dementia patients: a 69-year-old showed improved mood and decreased impulsivity; a 63-year-old reported reduced irritability and anxiety and was able to discontinue alprazolam; a 65-year-old reported reduced anxiety and improved chronic pain management. Authors concluded: "In the absence of strong evidence-based treatments for these symptoms, CBD use may be effective in alleviating symptoms among these patients."

Does THC slow the progression of Alzheimer's?
Preclinical research from The Scripps Research Institute and the Salk Institute suggests THC may inhibit the enzyme responsible for amyloid plaque formation. These findings have not yet been confirmed in large-scale human clinical trials.
Is CBD safe for elderly patients with dementia?
